Code Interpretation
Description: When there is uncertainty or disagreement as to the intent or meaning of a zoning ordinance standard or the zoning map, a person can ask the Zoning Administrator for an interpretation. For example, the question may relate to (i) the zoning map, (ii) a specific provision in the code, (iii) how a specific provision in the code is applied in a specific instance, or (iv) terms and conditions of an approval.

Submittal deadline: None - applications can be submitted daily


Forms: All application forms are posted on the City's website (Licenses & Permits).
 

General review process:
  1. Submittal of application materials. The applicant submits an application and other required materials along with the application fee.
  2. Determination of completeness. Department staff reviews the submitted materials to determine if the application is complete. If the application is not complete, the applicant will be notified of incomplete or missing requirements.
  3. Zoning Administrator decision. The Zoning administrator prepares a written interpretation in consultation with the City's corporation counsel.
  4. Written decision sent to applicant. The department staff sends a copy of the decision to the applicant.
  5. Public record copy. A copy of the interpretation is retained as a public copy.
